Have you ever sewn on a button with a needle and thread? Well, no more!
For some unknown reason, my husband looses buttons on his pants like they are going out of style! And, I don’t know about you…But, I’m not one of those sewer’s who finds hand sewing relaxing and therapeutic. I HATE IT! So, I always use this trick my mama taught me way back when!
How to sew a button, the quick and easy way!
Step 1
If you have the button, great! Use that. In my case, the button was missing. I rifled through my button stash and found one that easily fit through the button hole. Next, tape it in place. I could easily see where the previous button had been sewn. I carefully lined it up and slapped a piece of tape over top.
Step 2
Remove your presser foot and turn off the feed dogs. If you don’t know how to turn off your feed dogs refer to your user manual. You’ll want to turn off the feed dogs so the machine doesn’t pull your fabric forward. Next, set your machine to a zig-zag stitch. The width will be determined by the size of your button.
Note: Some sewing machines allow you to adjust the settings to avoid the feed dogs moving the fabric. You’ll need to determine if your machine can do that.
Step 3
Place your project in the machine and lower the presser bar. Now, very carefully lower the needle by hand. Slowly lower it all the way and continue to until you can determine if your zig-zag setting is the correct width. If it is not, adjust it slightly and check until you get it just right. Once you’ve got the right width, continue sewing several stitches. If necessary, repeat with the other set button holes.
Step 4
Remove the tape. If you’d like, you can bring the thread to the back using a needle and tie it off for extra security! Or, you can simply clip the threads! Maybe apply a little fray check. Whatever works for you!
